MonoFront.jpg (78674 bytes) 1895 "MONOGRAPHS"

This is the first in a series of ten articles done for the NGS by the American Book Co. which were going to be a regular teaching aid.  No more were done, and single copies of a set of all ten are quite rare. The next year, the publisher did a book version titled "Physiography of the United States" (same content - see Technical Publications section). Not in my collection... shown for historic significance.

This is a special version of a reprint of the Grosvenor article on Russia.  This reprint is difficult to find, and this leather example is a jewel.  Not in my collection... shown for historic significance.

story.jpg (157990 bytes) 1915

This item is "The Story of the Geographic"... 8" x 11" and 16 pages.  This is the earliest publication telling about the "Geographic" as it was often called. It is also just about the most aesthetic piece anyone could have in a collection. It has patterned onionskin separators, sepia like pictures, and fine paper. The cover paper and graphics are so artfully done, one would mistake this for a 1990's promotional.  It's worth over $200 if you can find one.

US41.jpg (159473 bytes) 1919 - United States

These Pictorial Geography sets were produced for school use to present geography in an eye catching way. As more sets became available on a variety of subjects, advertising in the National Geographic Society issues sought to interest the family directly or by encouraging school buying by "popular request".  These are not dated, and numbering does not match magazine ads. This set has "Group V- Section 3" designation but was advertised from the very first ad for these in the June 1919 #.

Pg11.jpg (148641 bytes) 1920 - Life in China and the Hill Tribes of the Philippines

The Sept. 1920 issue has an ad that announced availability of new pictures bringing the total pictures in all of the sets to 288.  That would be the total count for the sets listed in the pictures section.  This set was not specifically mentioned in that ad., but is labeled as Group I, Sections 5 & 6.

The famous and expensive set of sketches by Wilkinson were printed smaller as a section in the Jan 1938 issue. These full sized prints were sold separately. I bought this set from the archive sale by the National Geographic Society. (see 1993 Ephemera for Archive sale list and prices.)

1940'sNewsReleases.jpg (75091 bytes) 1940's

These are National Geographic News Releases.  These articles were regularly sent to newspapers or other publishers around the world.  Topics varied, but had some relationship to geography...many in this era were war related (see 3 samples of 17 pages and 9 topics that were sent in these envelopes - have 1 1/2 cent stamps).

1940

To honor Dr. Bell, the National Geographic Society sent first day cover mailings (the Bell Stamp affixed) to a varied list of recipients.  This one happened to be a phone company employee.  More research needs to be done on why it was mailed from Boston and if recipients paid and signed up for the mailing.

1969StyleManual.jpg (84639 bytes)

1969

This unusual and rare manual was developed for internal use in standardizing practices in the many publications of the National Geographic Society.  The page to the right explains it, and the manual covered from Abbreviation (don't do it) to Yuletide (don't use it).  8" x 10"...105 pages.            (Bob Simpkins Collection)

1971BOUNTY.jpg (90072 bytes) 1971

While this letter is not old, the authentic artifact from National Geographic Society work the "Bounty" is old. That, and the signature of Luis Marden who presented it to a National Geographic Society employee, make this a very desirable piece indeed.  It went up on Ebay auction and is probably worth quite a lot.

1975Cosmos.jpg (136013 bytes) 1975

Serious Collectors know that the principals that formed the NGS meet at the Cosmos Club in D.C.  This is not an NGS Publication, but in it amoung other Club History is the reference to NGS on page 4 of 10 (see inset).  This is the stuff of NGS History.

NgPlate.jpg (54097 bytes) 1980's?

If it looks like, feels like, and works like a salad plate, then......

This would appear to be a serving piece for National Geographic Society events. The logo is not unique but information about it's history suggests a date before 1985. It is  10 1/2" in diameter.

1991

This is an Album view of  42 proofs presented so full choice of viewing is possible.  I believe that all of these proofs were included in a magazine, just possibly edited differently. These are proof sheets that were being edited for late 1991 issues.  The majority of them are from the Alaska and Indian articles, but there are others as well.  They were sent to me by Paul Tylor, VP.

1992Digital.JPG (109783 bytes) 1992

This 6" x 9" pamphlet obviously looks "NGS", but even though it uses Michelangelo to show off it's color rendition, it is nothing more than a sales promo for the company that produced Computer Video Products (out of Canada).  I never could find out if there was a positive connection to NGS or if there were negative results of this item.

Click on Pic to Enlarge  Not for sale since it is not actually NGS (a bulk customer might talk me out of it).

1992Backpack2.JPG (51888 bytes) 1992

This World Explorer Backpack was advertised in the 1992 member catalog for $14.95.  It was also offered free as an incentive to purchase the book "Exploring Your World" in 1992. That offer was in a Promotional mailing. (see Promotional For NGS Products - 1992).

1993Books.JPG (63552 bytes)

1993

This Book Catalog was produced as a sales tool for demonstration of Digital Photography to the National Geographic Society.  At right is the inner frontice page which has the KanImage card superimposed. This page would seem to suggest that if used, this catalog would have been sent to booksellers to promote National Geographic Society Books.  There is no indication this was ever done.  This piece came from a National Geographic Society employee, and is rare in the collector community.

1996

The 4 cards shown left, right, and below are from the Sir Joseph Banks "The Greening of the Empire" Exhibition  in the Natural History Museum, London. These, 4 pictures, and one poster (see posters and pictures) became available from a Studio near Boston that designed them. A limited number of these made it to this side of the pond and are not common to US collectors.

1996Banks4.jpg (107598 bytes)
These were published by the UK office of National Geographic located in Guildford, Surrey. Because they were published for sale in museums in England, the press runs are relatively short (2000 to 3000). Eventually some of these items did find their way into the US and were sold in the gift store at NGS headquarters.
